Last week the Literacy Committee had its Year End Celebration meeting.
All three committee cadres came together to review the results of the Stevenson Student Literacy Survey. This Spring, over 1,000 Stevenson students were administered a survey that measured three different aspects of literacy instruction at SHS: reading habits and attitudes, awareness of strategic reading, and connections between academic disciplines. The full report and survey results can be found here.
During the committee meeting, teachers worked with colleagues within their division. Before reviewing the report, groups of teachers made predictions about what they expected the results to reveal. Teachers then had time to review the report before sharing out the implications of the student responses. The results had teachers considering how our students value literacy, prioritize their homework outside of school, experience a shared literacy vocabulary in different academic disciplines, perceive the difficulty of reading and writing tasks, and implement strategic problem-solving skills when encountering a challenging text.
The discussions that began at the meeting will continue into the future during one-on-one coaching sessions and with other teachers throughout the building. We have encouraged committee members to increase their roles as literacy leaders within their teams and divisions. The data from the survey should give all stakeholders much to consider regarding literacy instruction at Stevenson. In addition, the Literacy Coaches shared some interesting literacy numbers with the SHS Board of
Education in an infographic (see SHS Literacy By The Numbers to the right). Both measurements - the student survey and the infograph - point to exciting results for our literacy program over the past 4 years, but as always, there is still work to do. Thankfully, due to the hard work of our faculty and staff, SHS literacy knowledge and skills are growing to the benefit of our students. We are excited to see where we can grow and improve in the coming years...starting with the Fall of 2017! Until then...have a great summer!
